In a surprising turn of events, Jim Jordan, the Judiciary Chairman from Ohio, faced defeat in the initial round of voting for the House speaker position. The setback occurred on Tuesday as a coalition of 20 Republicans, alongside all Democrats, rejected his candidacy.
However, this might not signify the conclusion of Jordan’s pursuit of the gavel. Supporters of Jordan have hinted at his readiness to navigate through multiple voting rounds to secure a majority.
“It may involve several votes; the outcome might not be decided on the first ballot. Nevertheless, I believe he is comfortable with that,” shared a GOP lawmaker with Fox News Digital following a closed-door House Republican meeting on Monday night.
Last week, Jordan was designated as the House GOP’s speaker candidate through an anonymous vote. Yet, it swiftly became apparent that winning the backing of moderates and cautious establishment Republicans would be a challenging task.
Interestingly, some Republicans, who opposed Jordan’s bid for speakership, opted for either ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California or Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Louisiana. Scalise, initially the Republicans’ designated speaker following McCarthy’s removal two weeks ago, withdrew just a day later due to opposition, particularly from Jordan’s supporters who pledged allegiance to the Ohio Republican.
When questioned on Tuesday morning about the number of voting rounds he was willing to endure, Jordan remained elusive. “We need to appoint a speaker at the earliest opportunity,” was his response.
